First Official Paper Money (Jiaozi)
1024 CE
Imperial emission of Jiaozi in Sichuan under the Song dynasty in China.
Historical Context
Under the Song dynasty (960-1279), China experienced unprecedented economic expansion. However, everyday currency consisted of heavy iron or bronze coins. In the Sichuan region, cross-border trade required transporting tons of metal, rendering transactions impractical and dangerous.
The Event
To alleviate this, Sichuan merchants began issuing paper receipts against deposits of metallic currency. In 1024, recognizing the system's efficiency, the Song imperial government monopolized this practice and issued the Jiaozi (交子), the first official state-backed paper money in history.
Key Figures
Emperor Song Renzong (who officialized the imperial emission of the Jiaozi in 1024).
Aftermath
The Jiaozi dramatically lightened commercial logistics and stimulated the Song empire's economy. However, a lack of monetary discipline and insufficient metallic backing later led to massive hyperinflation crises, weakening the dynasty.
Legacy & Culture
This invention anticipated the appearance of banknotes in Europe by several centuries (Sweden, 17th century). It demonstrates China's early capability to theorize fiat currency based solely on trust in the issuing authority.
Historiography
Marco Polo's 13th-century accounts describing paper money under the Yuan dynasty long sparked disbelief in Europe. Modern historians analyze the Jiaozi as the world's first laboratory for monetary dematerialization.
